This starts like your typical New York City fairy tale : Charlotte was a new girl in town, pure and innocent. On a Friday night, she went to a bar with some friends, and met a guy. The guy was nice, they talked, they laughed, they made out, and finally they exchanged their number and agreed to see each other again the next day.
On Saturday evening, Charlotte called the guy, and he asked her to meet him in the same bar. But when she arrived, the guy was acting strange. After a few greetings, he spent the whole evening talking to another girl, barely acknowledging Charlotte.
One hour later, the other girl and Charlotte’s date were leaving together. Before he left, he told her: “Oh, sorry we didn’t get to talk that much tonight, but definitely give me a call next week end”. And then, the next day, he sent her a text message saying “Hey man (Charlotte was a guy, and the other girl too), sorry I did not get to talk to you too much tonight, but give me a call soon”.
As poor Charlotte told me, dumbfounded, the story of her typical second new yorker date, I couldn’t help but wonder: Is monogamy so hard we cannot even pull it up for one evening? Is it ok to bring someone else home on a second date and still expect to be called back? And, above all : Are New Yorkers so advanced in the dating area that no one else gets them, or are we just rude narcissist assholes who deserve to be single forever ?
